Music Snob

I realize sometimes I can be a bit of a music snob. I love finding new music but I'm pretty uninspired these days by what is "main-stream". Take "I Kissed a Girl" by Kate Perry, for an example. I took a listen - I mean it's #2 on Itunes right now and it's total, and complete crap. And yet it's everywhere. I don't understand it. The Jonas Brothers? Really?? What do they possibly have to offer? Jessica Simpson doing country? We already have Carrie Underwood. Thanks Jess. And while I like both artists separately, I hate Rhihanna and Maroon Five's new song. It doesn't work. Much like Madonna/Timbaland/Justin Timberlake. Can we please stop with the contrived duets??

Somehow New Kids On the Block have a new Backstreet Boy song that is doing well? I was really hoping their tour would be all their old stuff. I don't need anything new from them, but sadly, they apparently need more money.


And then on the other hand some people are working their butts off - Adele, G Love, Yoav, Death Cab For Cutie, My Morning Jacket, Justin Nozuka, plus Amos Lee has a new CD out which I'm sure will be fantastic. I just wish people would expect more from what they're listening to.


Plus thanks to all who recommended the Wire. It's fantastic and much needed since I really only have the Bachelorette and So You Think You Can Dance (I really like Will and Twitch, but the blond/quirky guy combo is my favorite).

I just finished the Red Tent too, on R's recommendation. It will take about 100 pages to get moving but it's really worth it when you commit. I couldn't put it down in the end. What a great concept for a book. Take a name, barely mentioned in the Bible and create and entire story out of her, her family. Really interesting.


Lastly, Steve and I haven't laughed this hard in a while. Thank God the camera was nearby. This. Is George.

Back from Seattle on Tuesday. Sick on Wednesday. Check, check.

Trip was fantastic and as always, makes me want to move back but then Steve reminds me he's not the "outdoorsy" type and I look at housing prices. Eh, no.

I think Akira just blackballed me

.... which would be a real shame as Akira is probably my favorite shoe store in all of Chicago. They always have unique, interesting, decently prices shoes/heels/sandals/boots that you don't find everywhere. Yes, I'm grovelling.

I just ran in for a pair of black flats. We won't discuss what I walked out with but as I walked in I couldn't help but see an entire table devoted solely to the gladiator trend. Which, dear friends, I'm not biting on. I scanned the room for other choices, found a few and sat down next to a lovely girl trying on roughly 7 pairs of gladiators. Struggling to determine which to buy the sales girl was on board with "you should just get a few so you can have options." It was noble, I get they work on sales. So the girl started admiring more and more pairs of gladiators in the mirror, tacky silver that were mid-calf, bronze, a heel gladiator, a gold wedge gladiator, a pair that basically went to her knees. They all looked the same. They all looked terrible. She finally narrowed it down to two pairs, the tacky silver and the bronze. Now, I will give her credit. She was Indian and the bronze looked *awesome* on her skin. So she looked at me and said those fateful words ... "What do you think?" Listen - she asked. The conversation goes as follows ..

Girl : I just can't decide. What do you think? I like the heel on this one.
Concerned consumer (me): Listen, they're gladiators. How long do you honestly thinks these will last?
(Look of death from sales girl)
Panicked sales woman: Oh, you'll get a least 2-3 years out of these.
CC: A summer. You're getting a summer.
Girl: You think?
CC: They're everywhere. Look - there's an entire table over there. Red flag.
Girl, not buying it: Well, which ones do you like better?
Sales chick: I like both.
CC: Of course you do. I'd say the bronze. Your skin looks great in them, and those are actually leather so you might possibly be able to get away with them with jeans.
Sales chick: You're not helping.
Girl: These all aren't leather?
Sales chick: Well, no ..

And as I checked out the sales girl didn't even walk with me to get the commission off my really cute cream sandals. And the girl got the tacky, silver, gladiators. The thing is - gladiators actually might stick around as an unwanted trend, like leggings. So maybe it was a good purchase? At any rate, I will be going to the Akira in Bucktown from now on.
